Volunteer
programme - Summer 2006 Argentina - July/August 2006 Based on our successful trips to the Nyanza province of Kenya we are organising a similar relationship with schools around the suburb of Castelar in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This trip will be our first visit focussed on providing extra-curricular activities children affected by the recent economic collapse of the country and forming links with the local community to enable repeat visits in the future. Trip Details At this point in time we are planning to work at a secondary school in the neighbourhood and potentially a local children's ward of a hospital. relayNET has an excellent network of contacts and volunteers in the area all ready to make this trip a great success. We will be staying in Buenos Aires and travelling from there daily to the area. We will develop activities such as sports and more general arts and craft activities. More detail on the planned curriculum will be available shortly. As with other relayNET activities we will also be looking to form links and work with the local community to understand their problems and how relayNET's humanist approach can assist in this region. Tourism opportunities are wide on this trip. Latin America has great places to see depending on your likes. It is also possible with such a long trip that a stop over on the way back can be added to the schedule. Why go on this trip This trip provides a valuable opportunity to either learn some elements of Art Therapy theory or improve on your existing skills whilst assisting the members of the local community who have been most affected by the recent difficulties. It also provides a chance to witness a volunteer programme in its initial stages as new links are forged with organisations on the ground. What kind of skills you need to go on this trip We find that enthusiasm, energy and a friendly attitude are the most valuable and only essential attributes for volunteer week. Teaching experience is useful although not essential and we are organising to get knowledge of some basic Art Therapy elements prior to the trip for those with no prior experience. We are also organising free Spanish lessons for those who do not speak the language. Your role as a volunteer You will be directly involved in assisting the local community via through the activities that are carried out. You will be assisting us in forming links with the local community so that an ongoing relationship can be maintained in future years. Where the placement is based Castelar, Buenos Aires, Argentina Facts and Costs This trip is being organised for July/August 2006 although precise dates have not yet been finalised. Costs are currently being calculated. Contact us on volunteer@relaynet.org.uk
