Volunteer programme - Summer 2006
Kenya

Magunga Primary School, Kenya - August 2006

Download this as a pdf

Following on from the successful trip in 2005 and our previous activities in the region we are offering another opportunity to spend up to three weeks working in Magunga Primary School, teaching the children and working with the community on various initiatives.

Trip Details

Your trip will start by taking the short flight from Nairobi to Kisumu on the Eastern bank of Lake Victoria. Kisumu will be your base for the duration of the trip.

The first two weeks will be spent working at Magunga Primary School teaching a variety of activities from sports to arts and craft, we will work with you to help create a lesson plan that will utilise your skills and focus on the subjects that you are most interested in helping to teach.

The middle weekend will be free providing you with an opportunity to explore Kisumu, visit the local agricultural shows or explore the many ancient ruins and landmarks around the banks of Lake Victoria.

During this period you will also have the opportunity to work with and learn from the local community, whether it be taking lessons in natural medicine from our local representative, helping to teach members of the community about the merits of solar \cooking or assisting in our Education for Non-Violence courses that provide a forum to discuss and overcome discrimination and tribal violence issues.

The final week will be yours to use as you see fit, you can choose to continue working with the school or we can help organise a safari - an option that last year's volunteers took. All of Kenya's National Parks, including the famous Masai Mara, are within easy reach.

We end the trip back in Nairobi where we again have local representatives who will show you the town and provide you with an opportunity to see the problems facing the under-privileged within this major city.

Why go on this trip

This trip enables you to combine sightseeing with volunteer work. Over the 3-week trip you will have a chance to work with the primary school children, teachers and members of the community gaining valuable insights into the world of volunteering and the varied problems, and opportunities, which exist within Kenya.

You will also be able to visit Kenya's many National Parks to see much of the wonderful wildlife that this country has to offer.

What kind of skills you need to go on this trip

We find that enthusiasm, energy and a friendly attitude are the most valuable and only essential attributes. Teaching experience is useful although not essential as we will work with you providing assistance and ensuring that the lesson plan is suitable for your skills and desires.

Travelling around Kenya can be a bumpy experience so do be prepared for this.

Language lessons will be provided within Kenya although you will find that most adults and children do have a reasonable understanding of English.

Your role as a volunteer

You will be involved in a variety of activities throughout the trip from working in the school garden and teaching arts activities through to assisting the community in their many and varied initiatives such as the non-violence courses and natural medicine lessons. This provides a valuable opportunity to experience a wide-range of volunteering activity.

Where the placement is based

Magunga Primary School and Kisumu are in the Nyanza province on the Western border of Kenya.

Facts and Costs

This trip is being organised for August 2006 although precise dates have not yet been finalised.

Our estimated cost for the entirety of this trip, including flights, accommodation, meals and safari is £1500. This cost can vary according to how you, and your fellow volunteers, spend your final week.

Do not book any flights at this point, we will work with the final group to select appropriate flights and ensure that the group and equipment arrive safely at Kisumu.
